Russia plans to expand fishery trade with Latin American countries in the coming years.

According to SeafoodNews, Russia plans to expand fishery trade with Latin American countries in the coming years, with a particular focus on boosting fish exports to Brazil.

Following the recent visit of Ilya Shestakov, Head of the Federal Agency for Fishery (Rosrybolovstvo) of Russia, to Brazil, Brazil has announced plans to substantially increase its imports of pollock, cod, haddock, herring, fish surimi and crab products from Russia.

During his meeting with Edipo Araújo Cruz, Brazil's Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Ilya Shestakov also highlighted the importance of lowering fishery‑trade barriers between Brazil and Russia and accelerating the implementation of joint research projects in the fisheries sector.

As part of these initiatives, the two sides agreed to develop an independent set of fishery environmental certification standards. Such standards will be compatible with international principles while adapting to the respective economic and environmental characteristics of Russia and Brazil.

In addition to scaling up fish supplies to the Brazilian market this year, Russian fishermen intend to promote their products more proactively among local consumers by taking a more active part in various local industry exhibitions and events.

Brazil is not the only Latin‑American country drawing attention from Russian fishermen. Russia also plans to increase supplies to other nations in the region, such as Argentina.
