The Chinese authorities have now approved the import of live snow crab from Norway.
The opportunities for export from Norway of live Norwegian snow crab to China were an important item on the agenda when Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy Marianne Sivertsen Næss met with the Minister of Chinese Customs, Yu Jianhua, in Beijing last month.
“The fact that China is opening for imports from Norway of live snow crab so quickly after I had political talks in China is very positive and shows the importance of visits to promote Norway's interests. Live snow crab is increasing interests in Asian markets, and market access to China represents enormous potential for Norwegian exporters. This can further strengthen profitability and create increased activity in Norwegian seafood industry." says Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy Marianne Sivertsen Næss.
Snow crab is a relatively new seafood speciein Norway and is captured with deep sea cages far north in the Barents Sea. Over the past decade the capture has gradually increased. This year the quota is 10.000 tons and will increase to 12.500 tons next year. From next year, 10% of the capture of Norwegian quota is designated to Live snow crab.
“China is the world’s largest seafood market in any measure, including snow crab. Here you can find snow crab in many seafood buffets and seafood restaurants. In China Live snow crab is most popular due to its quality, freshness and food culture.” says Norwegian seafood council Sigmund Bjørgo.
